Book #41: Kokoro

Kokoro

by Natsume Soseki

The story in Kokoro takes place during Japan’s transformation from a feudal system to a modern monarchy during and after emperor Meiji’s reign, from 1868 to 1912 AD. It was a complex time in Japan’s history, and Natsume (his family name) focuses on the personal isolation that occurs during such a dramatic, national change.

For the reading project, I will use a new translation from Meredith McKinney, released in 2010. The copy I have is an electronic edition. At my standard font size, the book is 200 pages in length.
